VISUALISING MENTAL HEALTH FEELINGS

DEPRESSION
Black clouds of ink or smoke overwhelming the tank, symbolising how sadness takes over someone’s mind and mentality. Having someone in my family who suffers with depression, I am able to gain a better understanding into how difficult it can be and how it can control their whole body with no escape. I could use this person in my portraits to help them visualise their feelings and emotions while suffering with depression. This can be portrayed with a clear tank of water that slowly gets overwhelmed with deep, black clouds of darkness – much like a sufferer’s mind.
ANXIETY
Feeling trapped, overwhelmed, nervous, worried and stressed are symptoms of anxiety from people I know who suffer with it. These feelings can be expressed through large clouds of rich coloured ink such as red or green taking over the tank of water until it is completely filled with colour – much like depression to overwhelm the tank, however it’s more suitable if the colours are more vibrant and bold rather than deep dark colours that depression would represent.
BIPOLAR
A combination of coloured inks together that at first are separate but then merge together into a combination of a tank filled with multi-coloured inks floating around to signify the multiple personalities people may carry and express. Colours like blue and red can be used together to express calm moods and anger/stressful moods.
MENOPAUSE
Impulses of depression and reduction of the enjoyment of life  are symptoms of menopause and they affect womens’ wellbeing. Hot flushes, night sweats, irritation and insomnia are often experienced too, this can be expressed through movement in water, ripples or bubbles that disturb the peace. Deep colours of purple and blue to signify insomnia and depression found within the side affects of menopause.
